Install languages

When you install Ubuntu, the language that you select in the installer gets installed, together with English. You can add further languages.

In addition to the user interface translations, installing a new language also enables various language support components such as dictionaries for spell checking, fonts and input methods.

Note

Some translations may be incomplete, and certain applications may not support your language at all.

  1. Open the Language Support application.

You can search for it in the Activities overview.

You can also access the application from Settings ‣ System ‣ Region & Language ‣ Manage Installed Languages.

  2. Click Install / Remove Languages….

The Installed Languages window lists all the available languages, with the currently installed languages checked.

  3. Check the languages that you want to install, and uncheck those currently installed languages that you want to remove.

  4. Click Apply.

  5. Enter your password, or the password for the requested administrator account.
